A Spring Kitchen Reset
how to reset your kitchen for a new season 🍋🥕
Happy spring!
Today we’re shifting out of winter mode and into a lighter, spring routine (at least in the kitchen!).
For me, a spring kitchen reset isn’t about a full deep clean or starting from scratch. Instead it’s about making a few intentional adjustments so your space actually supports how you want to cook and eat this time of year.
In the winter, I’m making a lot of soups, stews, roasted vegetables, and longer, slower meals. My fridge is fuller, my pantry is more packed, and there’s usually a few random leftovers or half-used ingredients floating around at any given time.
By the time spring rolls around, it starts to feel a little (okay, very) heavy and slightly chaotic.
Soooo instead of doing a full overhaul, I like to do a spring reset! Nothing complicated, just a few small shifts that make my kitchen feel lighter, more functional, and easier to use day-to-day.
Here’s exactly how I approach it (and how you can too!):
Start With Your Fridge
If you do nothing else, reset your fridge.
This is the place I interact with the most, and even a small clean-out here can completely change how my kitchen feels.
Instead of taking everything out at once (which can get overwhelming), go shelf by shelf:
Toss anything expired
Take note of what you do have
Wipe down each section as you go
Once you’ve cleared things out, reorganize with intention!
A few things that make a big difference:
Keep produce at eye level so you actually use it
Put ready-to-eat items and soon-to-be expiring items (like leftovers or prepped food) front and center
Group similar items together so you’re not searching every time you cook
I’ve found that the easier my fridge is to navigate, the more likely I am to cook at home and use what I have.
Edit Your Pantry
You don’t need to fullllly reorganize your pantry, but a quick edit goes a long way.
Look for:
Duplicates (multiple open jars or bags of the same thing)
Anything close to expiring
If your pantry is starting to feel crowded, it can help to create a small “use this first” section for anything that’s been sitting around.
I also like to take stock of any specialty ingredients I’ve picked up and make a point to use them before they get forgotten (or go bad).
Start Shifting Your Grocery Habits
This is where the seasonal change really starts to happen!!
Instead of doing a complete reset of what you buy, just start swapping a few things each time you shop.
In the spring, I naturally lean toward:
Greens like spinach
Fresh herbs (parsley, dill, chives)
Citrus
Lighter vegetables like asparagus, peas, and zucchini
You don’t need to have a perfectly “seasonal” grocery list. Even adding one or two fresh elements to your usual meals can completely change how they feel.
If you need inspiration of what to buy, here is March’s seasonal produce guide (with recipe ideas!).
For example:
Adding lemon and herbs to a grain bowl
Tossing greens into something you’d normally make without them
Finishing dishes with something fresh
These small adjustments naturally shift your cooking without requiring a full plan.
Prep a Few Key Components
Spring cooking tends to be quicker and more flexible, so instead of full meal prep, I like to prep a few basics that I can mix and match.
At the start of the week, I’ll usually do 2–3 of these:
Wash and chop greens
Cook a grain (like rice or quinoa)
Make a simple dressing or sauce
Roast a tray of vegetables
Prep chia pudding or overnight oats for breakfast
Reset Your Counters
It’s easy for surfaces to collect things we don’t reallllly need in our cooking space and over time that can make the kitchen feel cluttered and chaotic.
Start by putting away anything that:
You haven’t touched in weeks or months
Doesn’t need to be out for easy access
Simply adds clutter without serving a purpose
This can include gadgets you rarely use, small appliances that are only occasionally helpful, paperwork, etc.
Once you’ve cleared the counters, take a moment to wipe everything down: your work surfaces, appliance exteriors, handles, and knobs. Even a quick clean makes a huuuuge difference in how fresh and inviting your kitchen feels.
Rearrange for Convenience
This step is small, but really helps make cooking more enjoyable for me!
Think about how you actually use your kitchen and adjust things accordingly.
For example:
Keep your most-used pans within easy reach
Store oils, spices, and salt near where you cook
Put frequently used ingredients at the front of your pantry
You shouldn’t have to work tooooo hard to cook a basic meal. The more intuitive your setup is, the smoother everything feels!
Focus on Making the Space Feel Good to Use
When I reset my kitchen for spring, my main priority isn’t just cleanliness instead, it’s about making the space functional and enjoyable.
A few things I try to focus on:
Being able to find things easily – When everything has a place and you don’t have to dig around for ingredients or tools, cooking feels much easier.
Having ingredients I’m excited to use – Stock your fridge and pantry with fresh, seasonal produce and items you actually look forward to cooking with.
Not feeling overwhelmed – Opening the fridge or pantry shouldn’t make you panic or stress about the clutter. A calm space makes decision-making easier and more enjoyable.
And here are some of my favorite ways to make my kitchen feel joyful:
Fresh flowers – Even a small vase of flowers can instantly brighten the space (I get a small bouquet at Trader Joe’s for $4.99 each week!)
Remove unnecessary clutter – Keep only what you use and love out on the counters, and find homes for the rest.
Create a clean spot to enjoy meals – Whether it’s a small breakfast nook, a clear counter, or a table, having a dedicated, tidy area to sit down and enjoy food is so important.
Treat yourself – When you’re doing your grocery shop, pick at least one fun treat just for you. It could be something new to try, a favorite snack, or a fun drink!
All to say a spring kitchen reset doesn’t have to be a huge overhaul to be effective.
You don’t need to buy anything new or spend an entire weekend reorganizing everything. A few small, intentional changes can completely shift how your space feels and how you use it :)
Clear out what’s not working, bring in a few fresh ingredients, and simplify wherever you can. That’s it!
P.S. if you need any cleaning motivation my new YouTube video is all about doing a Sunday reset!
xoxo,
Natalie
